Loren Gold’s Prelude Inventions: Twelve piano pieces

Pete Townshend: “One night on tour with The Who in 2022 Loren performed one of his prelude inventions before we launched into ‘LOVE REIGN O’ER ME’. I was hugely moved by it and suggested that Who fans might like to hear and see a video version of it on our website. Brian Kehew (our stage technician and blogger) worked with Loren to make videos of twelve of these inventions that I am delighted to share with you here, one per week during the coming tour.

The one that started all this is now featured in a pas de deux dance scene in the Quadrophenia Mod Ballet that has recently been on tour in the UK. This piece was performed at Jacksonville in Florida on the 2022 tour. Let us know which of these twelve lovely piano pieces is your favourite. They all most certainly shout out for song lyrics. They are mostly in the key of Eb minor which is the key of ‘Love Reign O’er Me’. I hope you enjoy these videos.

A gift for the Song Is Over tour.

  2. Stephen Heald says:

    Lovely and so fitting!
I have been a WHO fan since 68. Will stay a WHO fan.

  3. Ron Cianciaruso says:

What a wonderful piece and what a wonderful way to share Loren’s immense talents with the WHO community. Bravo Loren !!!

  4. Patricia “Patty” Cicora says:

Couldn’t be more proud and a Fan of Loren Gold – for sometime now! Growing up in the 60’s and in the Arts in high school in the 70’s The Who is one of my all time favorite bands including The Beatles and America’s band Chicago.
After listening to how exquisite Loren performs with The Who – I started to research and study more about who this wonderful piano player is including a podcast he was featured in with his friend Vicki Ablesen! It was an amazing over an hour podcast as Lauren shared growing up playing the piano since he was five years old. I believe it was his mother that got him into playing the piano and he just couldn’t stop. I seen that during his lessons Lauren was already adding all his extras to the pieces of the scores!
Also, during this time Loren also joined Chicago (which I am a fan club member and committee member)and I also viewing his grand résumé!
I quickly shared with my Chicago friends how exciting it is to have Loren Gold be a member of Chicago and realizing what an honor this is for us to get to hear him adding all his extras to Chicago’s music. Loren is respected all over the World and his love and respect for Roger, Pete and Brian is unmeasurable 🤗
I remember before taking a VIP picture with Chicago before their concert last November, Robert Lamm said to (jokingly) “I know WHO your favorite is”. I lost it 😅 looked over to Loren smiling and told Robert: “I’m such a fan of The Who and have been studying his career for a bit!
I’m loving this 1st piece “Padua” and can not wait to listen to the following 11 pieces‼️

  5. John Nymann says:

I am so Happy for you Loren and all your accomplishments. Having my biggest influence (Townshend) ask you to write music for Quadrophenia show or ballet is mind blowing. This piece is dark and mysterious. Love it.

  6. Bravo, Loren! I can’t wait to hear the others!!!

  7. Hoagie says:

Thanks for the gift Pete and Loren..awesome

I’m looking forward to all 12 and then I will cast my vote.

    What a creative, great idea
    to further inspire Who music
    and beyond! BRILLIANT

  8. Lauren Eastman says:

It’s very moving. Played with emotion and perfection. Loren is a genius.

  9. Beautiful… I would like this journey to continue

  10. Likewise, I am inspired to move forward on my own musical projects; thanks, Loren & Loren!

  11. Luis says:

Great idea to produce videos of all Loren Gold s piano intros. He is very lucky. John Rabbit Bundrick also recorded many piano solo albums.

  12. Catherine/Doylestown says:

I never thought that I’d be seeing Loren Gold perform at two separate concerts for two different bands this month. Congrats, Loren….you are the Prince of Quadrophenia! Tell Mr. Robert Lamm that! I think Chicago the band is a great fit for you. But I am certain Pete and Roger will miss you as will every Who fan who had the pleasure of seeing your great work on the keys for many shows over the years. Break a leg!

  13. Catherine- Bucks County PA says:

I have voted for Padua and Chicago. They are beautiful, dark and I am getting an Eastern European vibe. Chicago has staying power.

To Pete and Roger, thanks for giving me so much more than I could ever have imagined during my lifetime. Particularly, with Quadrophenia. You will never be forgotten.

See everyone in Philly tomorrow! And thank you for coming back again. Nothing but love!
