San Diego, CA: The Who prove that the show must – and can – go on.

When Zak Starkey was taken ill (nothing serious) yesterday hours before The Who’s show at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend invited Scott Devours, who had toured ‘Tommy’ with Roger’s solo band two years ago, to step in.

Scott was magnificent. He played the whole of Quadrophenia note perfectly with only a two hour runthrough to the delight of everyone – onstage and off. Scott performed the ‘greatest hits’ encore with no rehearsal at all.

At the end of the show, Pete Townshend gave him a warm and well deserved tribute.

“Quadrophenia’s not an easy piece,” says Roger Daltrey. “To do what Scotty did took real guts.”

I was at the show last night in San Diego. It was an incredible, masterful
performance by the greatest band in the world. Third time I’ve seen them and Roger never sounded better.

Scott WAS magnificent. Pete came out and informed the audience before the show what had happened. I really appreciated that.

If you have a chance to see this tour DO NOT miss it. I’m still tingling with excitement over what I witnessed last night.

    Thanks guys!

  2. Mike Faulkner says:

Seem to remember the last time a drummer had to step in to replace a sick Who drummer. His name was Scott also.

    1. Who fan says:

You are correct. It was a different Scott. Pete Townshend mentioned this at the show last night. And the show WAS impeccable – masterful performance, incredible visuals, visiting with John Entwistle and Keith Moon was very cool. Greatest concert I’ve ever seen.

  3. Suzi says:

Wow….So close to home and I wish I could of been there! Was at the LA Staples show and they knocked my socks off 🙂 I dream of seeing Pete and Roger again pleeeeease!! You guys are still so great love you! 🙂 Long Live Rock Long Live The Who! Xxoo

This was my first Who show and it was incredible. So glad I have now seen them perform live – and this helps completes seeing as many of my favorite bands/artists in my lifetime.

The drummer, Scott Devours, stepped in at last minute and was just awesome. My favorite parts of the show was how they edited in John Entwhistle’s bass solo during “5:15”, and singing along on Who Are You (favorite Who song).

Great lights, great sound. Hope everyone else had a great time!

  7. Timothy Kirchoff says:

    I love The Who!

  8. Gary SInkeldam says:

Was at the show. Scott did an incredible job. I hae been waiting 40 years to see just the Who do Quadrophenia. I was not diasappointed.

Third times the charm! Saw THE WHO in ’82, ’09, and this show was by far the best. Scott is a fantastic drummer if he can do Moonies/Starkey’s bits with two hours practice time and pull off what he did. Loved seeing the John Entwhistle bass playing exhibition, he was also clearly one of the greatest.

  10. Shawn Perry says:

Knowing Scott, it doesn’t surprise me at all he pulled this off. He’s a great drummer and will be featured on VintageRock.com in the next couple of weeks…

  11. Dave Osborne says:

This is the second time a Scott has come to the rescue of The Who by taking over drumming duties. The other being Scott Halpin, who replaced Keith Moon at San Francisco’s Cow Palace in 1973, because he was incapacitated by elephant tranquillizers.

  12. Tommy1 says:

Wow,that’s what I call real depth. I wonder if you could locate the guy who was a part of the audience at the show in ’73 when Keith Moon had to be carried off the stage. Maybe he could be a sub drummer again (lol)

    1. Reno says:

That guy was Scott Halpin (he replaced Keith in the Cow Palace in San francisco). Unfortunately he died a couple of years ago.

  13. Vince says:

    WOW…what show in San Diego

Only that Pete introduced the band I wouldn’t have missed Zak..hope he’s ok

What an amazing looking and sounding show

the lighting is so amazing and modern and I’ve never hears that arena sound so good
    BRAVO SCOTT!

  14. LyndaGrace says:

    good on ya Scott.
    Be well Zak.
    Nothing stops The Who from performing ;

  15. D Stenger says:

Scott Halpin, from Bloomington, Indiana, passed away a few years back.

  16. Jeff says:

Saw them last night in Phoenix! Amazing show and Scott was amazing! I saw them many times when they were four including their first tour to the US and Roger sang like he did back in the day and Pete just keeps getting better!

  17. Mark Fiscus says:

I saw the (excellent) show last night 2.6.13 in Glendale, AZ. As a drummer I can appreciate the job that Scott pulled off flawlessly. He joins the ranks of my all-time favorites. He didn’t even break a sweat! Grace under pressure…

The whole band rocked it – the energy level was amazing. Roger and Pete are a long way from slowing down! Awesome show, stunning job Scott and best to Zak.

  18. Will Thiel says:

Saw The Who last night at Jobing Arena in Glendale AZ! The band was on fire and Scott did a magnificent job! Roger and Pete were incredible to say the least! Get well soon Zak, and long live The Who!

  19. KG says:

Saw the show in Glendale from the 11th row. Loved the musicianship, though it seemed like there were several technical difficulties. But Rog and Pete have such a stage presence. Was singing at the top of my lungs!

  20. James Kelleher says:

What a show last night in Glendale, AZ! Scott did a great job and you would not have known that it was his second night. Thank you Pete and Roger for wonderful memories!

  21. SaunieInDiego says:

When Pete Townsend announced a substitute drummer, I had my doubts but he (Scott Devours) truly rocked the house that night. it was nice to see the high praise that pizza piad to him. Jolly good show it was!

  22. Phil W says:

Saw the show in SD truly one of the best Who shows I’ve seen– I was at the Cow Palace for that infamous concert Tue night was truly a great concert

  23. Arnie says:

Was at the Phoenix show they were absolutely amazing. Hard to believe that they could still be that good. Pete and Roger are amazing they appear to improve with age

  24. Robb says:

    Legends…

  25. Dosda says:

  26. acgypsy says:

I was at the Glendale show, it was my 3rd show on this tour alone (Atlanta, Greenville) 21 shows overall and as always they were on fire. But just like in sports when you get hurt and your sub comes in and performs better then you getting your job back may not be automatic. Zak had better get back soon because Scott was brillant, and I like Zak.

    1. John W says:

Devours was great given the circumstances, but Zak is probably the best drummer in Rock and Roll at the moment and his style is perfectly suited to the Who. His job is safe.

  27. Larry says:

Saw the tour in San Diego. Best show they have done in years! It was a true delight. Pete and Roger were at their finest and Scott thanks for stepping in, you were a great replacement.

  28. Alan_M says:

What an amazing feat, what a great show! Scott was brilliant!

  29. Kourry says:

The first Vegas Show has ROCK!!!
Thanks for this Night with the best Band and Music ever….

  30. John W says:

Having seen the LA show last week and not heard the news about Starkey, it was a surprise to see someone else sit down behind the kit opening night in Vegas. Devours did terrific work considering he was asked to play a 90 minute masterpiece. Simon is handling many of the leads, it would be interesting to hear Pete talk about this. Pete managed to stab his hand on his guitar’s whammy bar and Roger got wonderfully pissed off at someone who lit up near the stage, Who could ask for more?

  31. Larry H. says:

I have tickets for the Feb 22ed performance in Atlantic City, NJ and I CAN’T WAIT ANYMORE!!!

My sisters, Debbie and Michele, are taking me to see one of my all time favorite bands, GOD bless them both!

  32. denise says:

That was a great concert in San Diego! I feel so blessed I got
    to b there

  33. Dortra says:

I never thought I’d get to see The Who live but I did and I had the time of my life! The Who rocked it!

  34. David & Fabrizio L says:

I’m part of the late 60’s early 70’s generation of The Who, and grew up listening to them, with that said, I just had to take my son Fabrizio (13 yrs) to experience his first concert of a lifetime. Hopefully this has influenced and enhanced his musical background and one day, he will be able to play like Pete Townshend.

    Thank you guys! Keep Rocking!!!
