IT’S HARD was originally released in the UK (Polydor WHOD 5066) on September 4, 1982, and as a CD in the early 1980s (Polydor 800 106-2). It is currently available as a remixed and remastered CD (Polydor 537 696-2) issued in 1997. Also available since 2012 on heavyweight vinyl.

It was released simultaneously in the US (Warner Bros WB 23731), as a CD (Warner Bros WB 23731-2) and reissued by MCA (MCAD-25986). It is currently available as a remixed and remastered CD (MCA MCAD-11635, 1997).

It’s Hard, The Who’s final studio album until Endless Wire in 2006, was released to coincide with what was billed as The Who’s farewell tour of America, which included two nights at Shea Stadium in New York. It reached #11 in UK charts and #8 in US.

Tracks 1-12 recorded and mixed at Turn Up-Down Studio at Glyn John’s home in Surrey in June 1982.

Original sleeve design, concept and photography by Graham Hughes.

1. ATHENA (Townshend)
ATHENA was released as a single in both the UK (WHO 6) and US (WBS 7-29905), pairing it with A MAN IS A MAN for the UK B-side and IT’S YOUR TURN FOR THE US. In the UK it made it to #40 and in the US to #28 in the charts. In the UK it also appeared as a 12″ picture disc with WON’T GET FOOLED AGAIN and A MAN IS A MAN. Some picture discs also list WHY DID I FALL FOR THAT, which are rare mis-prints.

2. IT’S YOUR TURN (Entwistle)

Released as a US single in December 1982 where it made #68 in the charts. Scheduled for release in the UK as WHO 7 but never actually released. Performed live on the 1982 Farewell Tour and sporadically ever since, Roger plays guitar while Pete takes over on lead vocals.
